Like a bat out of Hell
There’s a string of similar games by Fantasy Flight, starting with the original Doom: The Boardgame, which released in 2004 to coincide with Doom 3. It features a team of up to four players against one player controlling the forces of evil. This was adapted onto a fantasy theme in Descent: Journeys in the Dark in 2005, which itself was updated with the more streamlined Second Edition in 2012. That system was refined further in Star Wars: Imperial Assault in 2014, but now it comes full circle with Doom: The Board Game (subtitle: Now There’s a Space Between “Board” and “Game”).
The updated Doom looks like it retains a lot of the basics of the original: asymmetric competitive multiplayer, square grid, tactical combat. It sounds like it is also taking elements from the recent Doom video game, such as the card artwork and a mechanic for Glory Kills.
This has probably been in the making for a while now. Though it was only just announced (right before tabletop’s huge event GenCon), it is slated for release at the end of this year.
