Complete closure, all jobs lost, nothing left
Today is truly a sad day for the Australian game development scene as the country’s final AAA game development studio, 2K Australia in Canberra, is being closed down.
Most recently known for developing Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, The entire studio is closing and all jobs there are being terminated. In a statement issued earlier today by 2K we were informed that development costs and location of studios were contributing factors to the studio’s closure.
We can confirm we have taken steps to begin the studio closure process for 2K Australia in order to better manage ongoing development costs while improving the working proximity of our creative teams. We are very grateful for the team’s valuable contributions to numerous 2K projects, and are working with affected staff to explore reassignment opportunities where possible.
This is truly a sad day for Australian gamers and the development industry in the country. At this point Australia is literally just the country that has to pay more for their video games than comparable countries have to.
