3DS could combat piracy with automatic Firmware updates

Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata has been discussing the ever-thorny issue of portable piracy, and has revealed one of the ways in which his company could protect the 3DS from sticky fingers — automatic Firmware updates via the system’s “SpotPass” feature.

“As part of the functionality of SpotPass, we’re looking into having automatic system updates via the Internet,” says Iwata. The SpotPass function allows the 3DS to access Wi-Fi hotspots while in sleep mode.

Using SpotPass will be more effective than previous update methods, claims Iwata, because people would often ignore manual system updates. As someone who has had to update his PSP ten billion times, I can agree with that sentiment.

Sounds like a decent way of going about things. Auto-updates would be so much nicer than spending my game time looking at a download screen. Does it sound good to you?
