The known issue with importing a custom Commander Shepard into Mass Effect 3 from the prior installments is going to be addressed in the next patch for the game.
BioWare isn’t entirely sure when said fix will arrive, since the patch needs to go through certification first and that takes time. This is good news for latecomers to the series who won’t have to go through a lengthy process when they finally make it to ME3, I suppose. Better late than never.
