Rovio, of Angry Birds fame, has now acquired the game studio arm of the Futuremark. The latter company, mostly known for 3DMark, PCMark, and Peacekeeper, has been doing pretty well for themselves in the gamespace after the success of Shattered Horizon and Unstoppable Gorg (pictured).
Futuremark CEO, Jukka Mäkinen, said “I am proud to see the potential of our talented games team recognized by Rovio.”
Both studios seem pretty jazzed about the fusion. It is a bit odd though, as this move mirrors those of Minecraft dev, Mojang. Indie studio creates a hit, makes positively stupid amounts of cash, then they start buying up other studios to complete their evolution. It makes sense, and I suppose it’s how capitalism tends to work, but I find the whole thing a bit weird.
