E3: Prey 2 is Blade Runner with aliens, looks amazing

Prey 2 is looking set to be one of E3’s biggest surprises. It’s certainly Bethesda’s least watched game, and that’s a shame because it’s already eclipsed its predecessor and could be one of the truly great sleeper hits of the generation.

I am excited because, as far as I can see, few games have nailed Blade Runner‘s aesthetic as well as Prey 2, and this is in a world populated by games that try to emulate Blade Runner‘s aesthetic. It’s set in an open world, with players taking on the role of a bounty hunter — formally a US Marshall abducted by aliens — who takes contracts and kicks ass in the name of money.

With fluid environmental navigation that puts Brink to shame, players can jump, climb, and run throughout sprawling, vertically designed cities, chasing criminals through strip clubs with intense pursuit sequences that feel ripped right from the personal diary of Rick Deckard. With an intuitive cover system, over twenty gadgets (such as a grenade that forces enemies to float in the air and out of their own cover), players have a superb number of ways in which they can either kill or capture targets.

Prey 2 is an utterly gorgeous game with levels that have rich contrasting reds and blues. The aliens are also superbly designed, although I hope they’re not all sapient in nature and get a little weirder. In any case, Prey 2 is a game that needs your attention. It has potential to be an utter jaw-dropper.
