A German advocacy group, the Federation of Consumer Organisations, is threatening legal action against Activision-Blizzard over the “always-on” DRM requirements in Diablo III.
The group demands that Diablo III‘s packaging be altered to warn consumers about its Internet requirement before they buy. The company has until July 27 to address the issue, or FCO will have its day in court.
This isn’t the first time the German consumer advocate has had a pop at Acti-Blizz. It had previously blasted Diablo III over its notorious downtime at launch.
Frankly, I say best of luck to ’em. I think if companies want to keep putting these kinds of conditions into the gameplay experience, they totally should be made to admit it upfront. As publishers more and more make demands of consumers, it’s not unreasonable for consumers to start making demands back.
