Jimpressions: Lollipop Chainsaw

Nick Chester did a full preview of Lollipop Chainsaw at PAX, and he loved it, but I simply had to check the game out for myself. Being a Suda51 game, I knew the game would be out-there, but I had no idea quite how balls-mental the experience would be.

As you might have already gathered, Lollipop is about a cheerleader with a chainsaw who carves up zombies and makes rainbows fly out of the stumps. She also fights a punk rock zombie who can sing words that become physical and fly at her. In this game, you have to dodge the words “Cocksucker” and “Vanilla Slut.” Let that sink in.

Lollipop Chainsaw is outrageous, to say the least, but here’s the real surprise — it controls extremely well. Suda has toned down the crazy in game design, even moreso than in Shadows of the Damned, to create a game that has an insane aesthetic, but very solid, playable controls. Dare I say it, but Grasshopper Manufacture may have finally found the perfect balance between accessibility and insanity.

I am incredibly excited about Lollipop Chainsaw, and I have a feeling it’s going to be a fantastically funny game. The over-the-top concept, hilariously awful puns, and delightfully mad zombie characters are setting the scene for a very exciting game. I just hope Warner Bros. puts some marketing into it!
