In the latest chapter of Mojang vs. Bethesda, Minecraft developer Notch has announced that he’s won an interim injunction allowing him to continue using the name Scrolls. While Bethesda/Zenimax can appeal the decision, it’s still an early victory for the indie developer.
This is not to say that Scrolls is now Notch’s to keep. Notch and his fans seem to think this proves their case, with the developer stating, “We never meant to infringe on anything bethesda does, and this means we didn’t.”
From what I know of interim injunctions, it doesn’t mean that Notch “didn’t infringe” on anything. It simply means that the court is keeping things as they are until the case is settled. This may very well still go in Bethesda’s favor, so those looking to support Mojang on this may not want to crack open the champagne just yet.
