World’s greatest videogame box art found in Africa

After all the drama surrounding BioShock Infinite‘s cover, I was ready to initiate a period of recovery and stop talking about box art for a good long while. In retrospect, that should have contained a get-out-of-jail-free clause for notable exceptions that would be simply impossible to resist bringing to your attention. Rules were meant to be broken.

In a piece for The Gameological Society, Joe Keiser writes about the current state of bootleg videogames in Nairobi, Kenya. “It is a beautiful, terrible place, perhaps my favorite in the city. And they sell games here, the sort of games you would expect in a place where only some of the rooms have a floor. Which is to say they are delirious hacks of old, pirated PlayStation 2 standards, from all over the world, with cover art that is uniformly amazing.”

The end result is indeed amazing, to the point where the interpretations of these games look superior to their legitimate counterparts. It’s worth pointing out that the three featured above are only the very beginning. For more, check out the extended collection over here.
