Third-person shooter starring a fish
It was such a shame to hear that Neo Aquarium: King of Crustaceans was not a good videogame. For years, I’ve longed to play a modern take on Odell Down Under that didn’t take itself seriously — like, at all — and King of Crustaceans could have partially scratched that itch. It’s still nice to hear (via Rock, Paper, Shotgun) that a follow-up is happening in Neo Aquarium 2: Ace of Seafood.
The sequel is a third-person shooter in which you control a laser-firing sardine that literally blows up upon being killed. You can try your hand at an early build, which appears to be more of a tech demo than anything, in your browser. And trust me, you’ll want to do that if only to mess around with the game’s destructible environment.
While Ace of Seafood isn’t good, exactly — at least not yet — I’m eager to see the concept fleshed out. Hopefully it will blossom into something greater than King of Crustaceans. Something that maybe even normal human beings can play and objectively consider to be a quality experience.
