If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em
Those who currently visit The Pirate Bay will be presented with a curious image. Like McPixel before it, top-down action-adventure title Anodyne has collaborated with the popular torrent site. The message from developers Jon Kittaka and Sean Hogan reads:
“We’d like to make a living by making games that will give people memorable experiences, but we know not everyone can afford them. So that’s why you can download a torrent of our game, Anodyne, and if you’d like and are able, also purchase the game!”
Yes, the creators are taking a proactive approach to piracy in an attempt to garner goodwill. Such a strategy could backfire, particularly for certain types of games (i.e., bad ones), but they clearly believe in Anodyne enough to do it and that’s commendable. The game, regularly priced at $10, can be purchased legitimately for as low as $1 right now in a promo. That’s a buck for the DRM-free copies for Mac, Linux, and Windows, plus a Desura key and also a Steam key, if such a release happens through Steam Greenlight.
