Sony Gamers Day 2007: SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Tactical Strike

Another little pleasant surprise for me at Sony’s Gamers Day was the PSP title SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Tactical Strike. Seeing as how I was never really got into the PlayStation 2’s first-person shooters, I never got into the whole SOCOM thing — mostly because I never had that Internet adapter. But, with the PlayStation 3 version coming out soon and this PSP title, I think my tune may soon change.

Before you write this off as just another SOCOM title, this isn’t what you think. Tactical Strike is an RTS, a close-up and personal RTS and I like it, a lot. In fact, besides maybe Warhawk, it was probably the game I spent the most time with at the event. I’m a sucker for war games and I’m a sucker for RTS, so this was a perfect match for me.

In trying to describe this game, look at it as this: Think Ghost Recon, but instead of being in first-person mode and shooting people, you’re just controlling the squad that does all the killing. You can set waypoints, upload custom teams, and set specific fire functions, etc. Even better is that the whole thing can be played via Ad Hoc and Infrastructure.

With games such as Tactical Strike and God of War: Chains of Olympus on the PSP horizon, maybe this little handheld’s got a bit of life in it afterall.
