Miyamoto: ‘Two GamePad gameplay is not within our objectives in the short-term’

Ever since the launch of the Wii U, we’ve heard the same song and dance about the dual GamePad situation — “it’s possible, it’s just not a priority.” IGN had a chance to chat with Nintendo at E3 about said possibility in the future, but it looks like the Amiibo toys have put the kibosh on that chance yet again.

Miyamoto himself states, “Certainly as we’ve been working on Wii U, I think we’re at a point where we don’t feel it’s realistic to expect people to purchase two GamePads yet. We’re still trying to get as many people as possible to buy the system itself, and that’s where our focus is right now. For the time being, two GamePad gameplay is not within our objectives in the short-term.”

For me, that’s disappointing to hear. Now, I’m not asking for games that specifically use both GamePads in a gimmicky fashion, like a Wii U Party 2 or a WarioWare-like situation. All I want is the power to flip a switch and use another GamePad in a similar fashion to a Wii U Pro Controller, with a blank screen. That’s it. The GamePad is a great controller, and it’s a shame that the system is limited to one at a time.
