What the heck is going on with this Hyrule Warriors concept art?

Rated ‘E’ for ‘Evil half naked woman bathing in blood’

The Hyrule Warriors strategy guide came out a while ago, so this art isn’t exactly news, though it was news to me as I stumbled upon it earlier today. It doesn’t look like many others have taken note of this bizarre sketch from the “Linkle” page before now. Other than this small mention on Tumblr, it seems like the internet passed this one over, probably too distracted by the enticing prospect of  a “Link with boobs” to take notice.

There is certainly a lot to take notice of here. As you can see, Link is savagely cutting off a Bublin’s arm, only to have its blood fly in a magnificent art over his head, and fall into the waiting arms of a half naked lady coming out of his shield. At least, I think that’s what’s going on here. Other interpretations of the image include “That lady is made out of demon blood” and “She’s turning his juice into power, naturally”. I guess the “true character of a woman who supports Link” is a some sort of vampire spirit that soaks up the carnage that’s left in the wake of mass murder? Also, it looks like Bulblins have pee for blood.

This idea wasn’t a total one-off goof either. Nintendo was committed enough to the concept to draft up a at least one more piece of finished art for their mystical, mostly nude shield lady. Maybe was meant to be the Warriors‘ bloodthirsty answer to Fi, Link’s passionless, no nonsense sword familiar? With one big round of Hyrule Warriors DLC left to go, I can’t help but hope that Nintendo sees fit to follow through with that concept. We’ll be asking them on Monday for more details on this strange idea.

In the meantime, what should we call this new friend to the Hyrule’s greatest hero? Hemoglobinymph? Menstruelda? Chances are Nintendo won’t tell us a whole lot about this unused character, so we might as well call her whatever we want.
