So Much Drama?
I took a look at the official Princess Bride mobile game the other day and it was garbage. Granted, I don’t like that movie, but I know plenty of people who do. It was a terrible, uninspired amalgam of boring minigames that had the balls to charge you a $3.99 entry price, and another 99 cents if you didn’t want to wait to unlock the rest of the games. Unfortunately, that’s a glut of modern mobile titles now though — you’ve gotta pick through the trash to find treasure.
There’s a new Mean Girls mobile title on the horizon, which is being billed as an “easily accessible tiara defense” game, where you take one of eight characters from the movie and apparently stave off a new clique of Plastics in each level. But then there’s also things like the art design, which is absolutely awful. I guess they’re going by the whole “being hit by a bus” narrative at the end of the movie (or whatever happened, anyway) and these poses are the end result of the girls having been hit by a bus, showing off post-hit-by-a-bus back support and bone structures. Lindsay Lohan’s character Cady appears to have gotten the worst of it, as you can see in the illustration.
But don’t worry. PR is here to save the day: “Mean Girls is hilarious, brutal, and endlessly quotable; I absolutely loved watching and re-watching the film,” said Jeff Meador, founder and president of developer So Much Drama. “The game is rich with the quirky humor, over-the-top high school power struggles, and everything from hilarious lines, peppermint foot cream, to, yes, the Burn Book.” The press release ends there, but I’m pretty sure he followed that up with “These things actually came out of my mouth and weren’t rehearsed at all, I actually speak like this.”
So Much Drama is responsible for the RuPaul game we recently covered, and while that seemed like a fun and tongue-in-cheek title that involved Ru and the queens from Drag Race, Mean Girls: The Game is an oddly-timed cash grab that looks like it’s going to lean on the free-to-play crutch hard. But hey, it’s got a “burn book” that looks like it’ll let you post annoying Facebook updates to your friends’ profiles if you best them at specific levels. And that’s really something…every other game in the world with social media integration lets you do. Thank god for innovation.
