Roughly 90% drop
While No Man’s Sky seems to be a day-one success, especially by indie standards, everything that’s happened after launch hasn’t been all that promising.
In addition to just about total radio silence from Hello Games about what happened to several of the game’s features (perhaps the studio is under NDA from Sony), it looks like there’s been an approximate 90% drop in daily active users on Steam. As per SteamSpy’s statistics, the game is just barely pushing 20,000 daily players as of this week, down from 200,000 at launch. As it turns out, the “bajillion planets” thing probably wasn’t enough to hold people over, especially when most of them blur together after several hours.
Can we wrap a bow on this “controversy” now? It’s easy to see that Hello Games over-promised, but the developers are far from a collective of mustache-twirling villains, and were likely damned by their own sky-high ambition. In the end we got a fun, yet not game-changing project. It kind of reminds me of Titanfall — another fun game that promised to change the world with dangerous levels of hype, and instead merely added to it.
