Sony gave us information, but no damn pictures
Following the announcement of the PlayStation 4 Pro, Sony sent out a press release detailing some of its new peripherals that will release this year. A new wireless controller, camera, and vertical stand will release on September 15, 2016 in North America, Europe, and Japan, while a new Platinum Wireless Headset will release “this holiday.”
New DualShock 4
The only new thing here is that the light from the light bar will also be emitted from the touch pad in an attempt to increase immersion by communicating such things as remaining health (I guess it’ll flash red or something, which sounds like it could be annoying). You’ll need an internet connection to use it though, as it requires an update to work. Like previous controllers, it can be connected via a USB cable. It’s compatible with PS4, PS4 Slim, and PS4 Pro. $59, €59, £54.
New PlayStation Camera
Like the new controller, the redesigned camera will require an update and is compatible on all PS4 types. However, there’s nothing really new in terms of function here, it just has a new design and a stand. $59, €59, £54.
Vertical Stand
Speaking of stands, Sony is making a vertical stand to be used with the new PlayStation 4 Slim and PlayStation 4 Pro. It doesn’t work with the standard PS4, which already has a stand for it. Sounds like a regular-ass stand, but Sony says it’s “made with translucent material to resemble the ‘shadow’ of the system when set vertically.” $24, €19, £16.
Platinum Wireless Headset
Sony’s “high-end” gaming headset has 7.1 virtual surround sound and will allow “select PS4 titles” to have 3D sound. Its “multi-position” microphone has noise-cancelling, and it is compatible with mobile devices and PlayStation VR. The headset will sell for $159, €179, and £129, at which price point it’s hard to call it “high-end” given that relevant technical data isn’t provided.
My personal advice: get a pair of quality headphones and a clip-on mic if you must talk. Headsets don’t compete with dedicated headphones in terms of quality for any given price point.
