The first (and best) Pokemon movie is coming back to theaters

Perhaps as a promotional stunt to create even more hype for Pokémon Sun and Moon releasing on November 18, The Pokémon Company has announced it will show the classic film, Pokémon: The First Movie for two days at select Cinemark theaters. Those days will be October 29 for matinee and November 1 in the evening.

They’ll even be showing the fun short Pikachu’s Vacation before the main event, just as they did back on the movie’s original release. I remember being so excited to see ALL NEW Pokémon like “Pikablu” back in the day, as my best friend and I rushed to get the front row seats and accompanying neck ache. Totally worth it.

I don’t think they’ll show the Birth of Mewtwo prologue, which was only in the Japanese release. So just in case, you ought to watch it now on the internet. It adds more depth to the already fantastic movie and character of Mewtwo. You’d be surprised just how deep and emotional a “kids movie” can get.

The movie truly stands the test of time and is not merely a case of nostalgia. I recommend this video which explains the first movie along with the next two films (which are also good) and their writer, Takeshi Shudo. Wait if you haven’t seen them yet as it contains spoilers.

If for nothing else, go for the experience. Watching Dragonball Z: Revival of Frieza in the theater for its one showing was a lot more fun than I expected it to be. Everyone laughing and having a good time together, but not going too far as to be a nuisance. I died either from laughter or glee when Master Roshi did a kamehameha and someone shouted “OG!”

The original Pokémon movie classic returns to select Cinemark theaters for a limited engagement. [Pokemon.com]
