Exploring absurdity with the developers of Dropsy and Screencheat

[Sup Holmes is a weekly talk show for people that make great videogames. It airs live every Sunday at 4pm EST on YouTube, and can be found in Podcast form on Libsyn and iTunes.]

On the surface, Dropsy and Screencheat don’t appear to have a lot in common, but there are more than a few threads that tie the two together. Dropsy creator Jay Tholen sited this interview between “America’s favorite Dad” Mr. Rogers and Joan Rivers as one of the inspirations for his character, while Screencheat co-creator Nicholas McDonnell sited playing Halo with his Dad as one of the experiences that fueled the development of his game. So in a way, we have Dads to thank for both games.

They also both rely on the player to fill in a lot of the blanks for themselves, and in doing so, both generate a tension that leaves us just off balance enough to make us laugh. While Screencheat encourages the player to create a picture in their mind of the physical space they occupy in-game, Dropsy allows us to do the same with emotional space by means of a farting, hugging, twerking, wrongfully maligned clown.

Thanks to Nicholas and Jay for being on the show, and please drop by when we welcome the wrongfully maligned Sandro Tomasetti (Gryphon Knight Epic) to the program today at 4pm EST. It’s going to be acknickulous.
