Dreams of the Deep
I forgot that there was a new Call of Cthulhu game in the works. The Cyanide-developed title was announced early last year, but news of the Lovecraftian “RPG Investigation” game has been infrequent as of late.
Luckily, publisher Focus Home Interactive have released a trailer for Call of Cthulhu that scratches a specific, spooky itch.
Call of Cthulhu follows the story of a Private Detective by the name of Edward Piece. Upon hearing that a famous artist has been found dead, Piece travels to Darkwater Island – a shadowy tract of land off the coast of Boston – in hopes to unravel the mysterious circumstances of her death.
Of course, nothing’s ever as simple as it seems, especially when you’re visiting a place with a name as ominous as Darkwater Island. Pierce’s investigation takes a turn for the otherworldly when mutilated whales, robed figures, and the entity known as the Great Dreamer start getting in the detective’s way.
Throughout the trailer, it’s clear that Call of Cthulhu has boarded the Lovecraft express. Almost every shot in the trailer captures the sense of unease and sanity-questioning atmosphere that permeates the late author’s Weird Fiction.
Pierce’s story (and probable descent into utter madness) is shaping up to be one hell of a ride. Call of Cthulhu is scheduled for release on PC and consoles later this year.
