That new Final Fantasy movie is out and apparently sucks

At least that is what critics say

I’m not a Final Fantasy fan, and it sounds like many movie critics aren’t either as Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV is ‘sitting pretty’ with a nine percent on Rotten Tomatoes. That means it is tied with Adam Sandler‘s The Cobbler and getting stomped by the smash hit video game masterpiece known as Pixels

I’ve not seen the film but here are some choice quotes from critics who have seen the Aaron Paul, Sean Bean and Lena Headey (Cersei from Game of Thrones) lead picture:

“It’s essentially a really long cutscene.” – Christian Holub, Entertainment Weekly

“There’s a very real possibility that watching “Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV” could result in brain addlement.” – Jeannette Catsoulis, New York Times

“The film’s convoluted plot and dense mythology … may leave even “Final Fantasy” devotees scratching their heads.” – Noel Murray, Los Angeles Times

“If the look of the movie should please fans, the plot is an absolute muddle-an unholy brew of flotsam and jetsam that ranges from Wagnerian motifs and garbled Latin names…to bits of ‘Star Wars‘ and ‘The Lord of the Rings.'” (Jeditor’s Note: I don’t know half of those words.) – Frank Swietek, One Guy’s Opinion

“As a stand-alone film, this is a beautifully rendered bore. As an advertisement for the forthcoming video game, it has some merit.” – David Ehrlich, indieWIRE

Some harsh reviews for sure, but not everyone hated it. Over on our sister site Flixist, Geoff Henao gave the movie 60 out of 100 but still had this to say: “As a gamer who will dedicate at least 100 hours into Final Fantasy XV, I can appreciate Kingsglaive for what it is. As a film critic, however, I can’t look past Kingsglaive’s inherent fluff factor.”

Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV is out now via a limited release in a few big cities across the US. Let us know what you think in the comments below if you happen to watch it.
