World-molding adventure Astroneer hits PC and Xbox One next week

It’s launching on Steam Early Access, naturally

A year ago, I was telling you about the cooperative sci-fi game Astroneer and its world-exploring, terrain-deforming ways. Next week, it’ll be playable at last. The game will debut on PC in Steam Early Access and Xbox One in Game Preview form on Friday, December 16.

The main draw, at least for me, is messing up worlds, Red Faction-style. “On this adventure, a player’s most useful tool is their ability to shape their world, altering the terrain and extracting valuable resources from planets, and moons. Resources can be traded or crafted into new tools, vehicles, and modules to create everything from massive industrial bases to mobile rover bases.”

System Era Softworks says it’s aiming for the Early Access run to take “a year or two.” The goal is to make a game that lets players explore procedural planets, reshape said planets, build ships and industrial bases, and play online with friends and strangers. So, yes, it’s another ambitious, work-in-progress space-exploration title. Based on this trailer, though, I’m liking the look of things.
