I wouldn’t bet against it
I imagine, for a certain portion of our audience, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of Wild winning another Game of the Year award is the last thing they want to talk about. Afterall, it was named the best game of 2017 by the Destructoid editors, the Destructoid community, The Game Awards, Japan Game Awards, Golden Joystick Awards, and a good chunk of the gaming websites out there. It’s the Energizer Bunny of video games because it just keeps winning and winning and winning.
In March, it will have the chance to complete its victory lap at the Game Developers Choice Awards. Breath of the Wild is up for the top prize alongside nearly the exact same set of games its been in competition with throughout the industry awards season.
GDC 2018 Game of the Year Nominees:
- The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
- PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds
- Horizon Zero Dawn
- Super Mario Odyssey
- NieR: Automata
Breath, PUBG, Horizon, and Odyssey are obvious choices at this point so it’s no surprise to see them securing nominations. That fifth spot is the trickiest to fill because there are so many deserving titles. NieR: Automata is a great choice and I fully approve but so are Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, Cuphead and Persona 5, though the latter two were named “Honorable Mentions.”
If Breath or Odyssey walk away with the top prize it will the be just the second time a Nintendo published title won the award. Metroid Prime was the first all the way back in 2002. If either of those titles or NieR wins, they will join Shadow of the Colossus as the only games from Japan to be named the Game Developers Choice Awards Game of the Year.
