Headline sadly not to be taken literally
Japanese retro-enthusiasts Hamster, renown for their ACA Classics range of arcade re-releases, have put out a tweet celebrating one million sales on the Nintendo Switch platform.
The company spent 2017 pumping out waves of classic Neo Geo titles on modern formats, announcing at year’s end their ultimate goal of publishing over 800 retro titles. Clearly the marketing model has been a smash on Nintendo’s hybrid-console, given these celebratory figures.
As a handheld device, the Switch is pretty much perfect for classic arcades, which obviously have a quick-play vibe. Titles so far range have included some of SNK’s classics such as King of Fighters, Samurai Shodown and King of the Monsters. This is not to mention of the many non Neo Geo releases that have seen new life on the Switch, such as Double Dragon.
Here’s hoping Hamster continue the nostalgia-fest through 2018 and beyond.
