The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has announced that they will present developer Epic Games with a BAFTA Special Award at this year’s E3 conference, which takes place in Los Angeles next month. The BAFTA will be accepted by Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney on June 12 at an event held at the London West Hollywood hotel.

Epic has been afforded the honour mostly for the creation of Unreal Engine, which has powered a plethora of popular video games since 1998, where it was first developed for FPS title Unreal. No doubt the BAFTA is also awarded in part for global phenomenon Fortnite, which has already proven itself one of the biggest video game releases of all-time.

“We are delighted to present this year’s Special Award to Epic Games,” said Dr. Jo Twist of the BAFTA’s games committee. “Having powered the creativity and imaginations of development teams of all sizes over the years – many of whom have gone on to win BAFTAs – it’s right to mark their huge contribution with this Special Award as part of BAFTA’s commitment to celebrating and promoting the very best in games.”

Tim Sweeney also noted: “All of us at Epic Games are honored that BAFTA has awarded Unreal Engine for excellence in technology, and we share this recognition with our partners and the creative community.”

E3 2019 takes place between June 11-14 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
