The meetup in Minnesota is off
Summer Games Done Quick has a format shakeup this year, even though every part of its name still holds true. It’s the world’s largest and most prominent speedrunning event, so the “Games Done Quick” part is accurate. And, it takes place in August, so the “Summer” designation is still good.
However, there won’t be a live, in-person event this year. Because of COVID-19 restrictions and concerns, the GDQ organizers have opted to scrap the week-long event that’s always held in Bloomington, Minnesota. Instead, it’ll be online only.
This isn’t the first online-exclusive GDQ. In April, there was an emergency Corona Relief Done Quick charity event where they raised more than $400,000 over the course of a weekend.
It’s a bit of a bummer, but it’s also the reality of 2020. One of the coolest things about GDQ is the ballroom full of people cheering them on. Understandably, that won’t be the case this time. No local co-op this time, online only.
Summer Games Done Quick is set to take place August 16 through August 23. All the speedrunning can be found on Twitch. As always, all money raised goes to Doctors Without Borders.
