The Tetris Company’s partnership with N3twork is kicking in
Electronic Arts is pulling the plug on its Tetris games for iOS and Android.
If you head to the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store, you won’t be able to find Tetris Premium or Tetris Blitz, two games that have represented fans’ limited options when it comes to (official) Tetris on mobile devices. EA is planning to retire its Tetris apps on April 21, 2020, as explained in this note:
We have had an amazing journey with you so far but sadly, it is time to say goodbye. As of April 21, 2020, EA’s Tetris app will be retired, and will no longer be available to play.
Kindly note that you will still be able to enjoy the game and use any existing in-game items until April 21, 2020. We hope you have gotten many hours of enjoyment out of this game and we appreciate your ongoing support. Thank you!
You read that right: the games will cease to function. Where does that leave us now?
As you might recall, in 2019, a company named N3twork signed a multi-year contract with The Tetris Company to “exclusively develop and publish new Tetris games built from the ground up for mobile.”
N3twork’s concept for the replacement game will immediately sound familiar to anyone who’s tried Tetris 99 on Nintendo Switch. The new mobile game in question – Tetris Royale – has a 100-player survival mode, plus a “Solo Marathon mode where players can hone their Tetris skills.”
If you’re curious, you can scope out Tetris Royale on iOS and Android before its worldwide release.
The new version of standard Tetris developed by N3twork is currently available on iOS and Android, and it’s your current best option for an official no-frills version of the classic game. That said, it is lacking some of the extra features from EA’s discontinued mobile Tetris, and the controls feel oddly slow.
