This ain’t a scene…
Borderlands 3 has millions of guns and that often feels like a moot point. There are so many firearms but the vast majority just stay on the ground, as they’re far worse than what you’re already packing. Borderlands 3‘s newest game mode wants every gun to play a role.
In an interview with GameSpot, Gearbox shared a few early details about this dedicated mode that’s called Arms Race. Creative director Graeme Timmins said “Our goal with Arms Race is to make the gun game in our game of millions of guns really matter.” That nearly guarantees a gameplay loop that will feel unique to what Borderlands 3‘s core offers.
Arms Race will also take place on its own isolated map, and it’ll serve as a standalone mode. While Gearbox stopped short of calling it a battle royale, Gearbox head Randy Pitchford described it as something that will appeal to fans of Call of Duty and battle royale games, but explicitly stated that it’s “not a battle royale.”
The full reveal of Arms Race is expected to take place sometime in October. Gearbox seemingly intends to hit the ground running with this one. During the recent Gearbox PAX panel (where free next-gen upgrades were confirmed), this new game mode was described as something that’s coming “later [in 2020].” Borderlands 3 players should be thrust into an Arms Race before the year’s out.
