Retro action-adventure finally prepped for launch
It’s been a very, very long time since we last heard from cartoon sci-fi sequel Freedom Planet 2, but developer Galaxy Trail has finally blessed fans with an update. The colorful anthro adventure is scheduled to launch on PC in spring 2022.
As a quick refresher, Freedom Planet 2 is the sequel to the cult hit Freedom Planet, which launched on PC way back in 2014, before later being ported to various console and mobile platforms. What started out as a Sonic the Hedgehog fangame eventually evolved into an original high-speed platform adventure, telling the tale of three furry freedom fighters who team up to prevent the galaxy from falling into the clutches of the devilish Lord Brevon. Freedom Planet won over a devoted army of fans thanks to its fun, fantasy storytelling, likeable cast of characters, and intricate, pixelated visuals.
While the original game was a crowdfunded affair, Freedom Planet 2 has been self-financed, with Galaxy Trail beavering away at the sequel’s development for many years. The sequel promises new mechanics — designed in response to player feedback on the predecessor, as well as a fourth playable character, panda gal Lady Neera Li. After a nervous wait for updates, fans will be pleased to hear that a release window is on the horizon. A remixed edition of the game’s original trailer was also released, which you can check out below. It’s looking slick. I’m really digging the “Saturday Morning” vibe.
