But really, what is going on?
A trailer for the upcoming Resident Evil live-action movie adaptation, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, dropped today. It’s filled with zombies, nostalgia, and one truly amazing trailer song selection.
The project, coming from Screen Gems and Constantin Film, looks to cover both the first and second Resident Evil games in terms of content. Kaya Scodelario of UK Skins and Maze Runner fame plays Claire Redfield alongside Avan Jogia as Leon S. Kennedy in the RE2 timeline. But, there are also shots of the first Resident Evil, with the S.T.A.R.S. squad walking right into the mansion.
And boy, does this trailer show a lot of iconic Resident Evil stuff. Not just some classic characters, Claire’s red jacket, or the RPD building, but even exact shots. Like, that’s the zombie-turning-head shot that feels synonymous with the first Resident Evil. And “itchy, tasty” too? It’s wild.
As for the rest of the trailer for Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, well, it’s got some goofy CGI at times and it’s got a veneer of camp to it. But honestly, I think that makes me like it more? Maybe it’s because of the absolutely bonkers song choice playing over all of it—seriously, kudos to whoever pitched it—but I think this could be a corny kind of fun.
We’re already getting our prestige video game adaptations, in the form of Netflix’s The Witcher and the upcoming HBO version of The Last of Us. Those will do their thing, and Netflix is working on its own live-action version of Resident Evil, too. Give me more camp.
Either way, it won’t be long until we find out “what’s going on,” as Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City premieres in theaters on Nov. 24, 2021.
