Family Values
Almost five years later, The Baker Family continues to terrorize video game fans the world over — Capcom has revealed that Resident Evil 7: Biohazard has passed the 10 million sales and global shipments milestone. This record figure makes the 2017 release not only the best-selling Resident Evil title but Capcom’s second-highest selling video game ever.
Originally released on PS4, PC, and Xbox One, (before later seeing a Nintendo Switch cloud port), Resident Evil 7: Biohazard was a wild departure from the sequels that had come before, adopting a new first-person perspective and taking a step back from its science-heavy predecessors to present a rural gothic tale of terror and torture. Set in the grim everglades of Louisana, Resident Evil 7 sees new protagonist Ethan Winters searching for his missing wife, Mia, eventually coming face-to-face with the nightmarish Baker family and a vile form of opposition known as “The Molded.”
Resident Evil 7: Biohazard saw Capcom debut its powerful RE Engine for the first time in a full-length video game environment. The tech engine has since been used on all Resident Evil releases, including remakes Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3, and this year’s smash hit, Resident Evil Village. Despite several excellent titles having hit the market in the years following Biohazard‘s releases, the seventh mainline entry continues to draw in new victims on a regular basis — its terrifying setting and Texas Chainsaw sensibilities piquing the morbid curiosity of all.
