Disclaimer: This may be the only time I can legitimately talk about best show ever Press Your Luck and, more importantly, Whammies, on Destructoid. Please humor me and my ridiculously long ramblings.
One nice thing about being old and decrepit is I was alive to appreciate the greatness that is Press Your Luck. For anyone that doesn’t know, Press Your Luck was a game show in the mid-80s hosted by the coolest guy of all time, Peter Tomarken (may he rest in peace). In the game, players answer trivia questions to earn “spins” and use those to “press their luck” on a giant, digital board full of money, prizes, and Whammies.
What are Whammies, you ask? Oh, man, let me tell you. Whammies are spaces on the board that, if landed on, take away all your money and prizes. The best part, though, is when a contestant lands on said spaces, the Whammies participate in some wacky animations on the bottom of the screen while the player overdramatically reacts in the background. God, it is so amazing. Check out some classic Whammy bits right here.
Well, the good news for fans of the show: A videogame version is coming to PC, consoles, iPods, and iPhones next year! Developed by the same folks that did the Price is Right game, Press Your Luck will utilize the same concept as the classic game show but with fancy graphics, customizable avatars, multiplayer support, and BRAND NEW WHAMMY ANIMATIONS!
Screw every other videogame that is coming out in 2009. This is my most anticipated game of next year.
Sadly, I’m not kidding.
