Maps, taunts and more in store for this summer

Sun, vacations, songs; there are plenty of reasons to look forward to the summer. Team Fortress 2 fans just got another reason though, as Valve has confirmed it’s working on an update for Team Fortress 2 set to arrive this summer.

In a blog post across its channels, the TF2 team at Valve has put out a call for Steam Workshop submissions. Now, Team Fortress 2 has had many summer updates, and the last few have been largely focused on items. But according to Valve, this one’s a bit different.

“The last few Team Fortress summer events have only been item updates. But this year, we’re planning on shipping a full-on update-sized update — with items, maps, taunts, unusual effects, war paints and who knows what else?! Which means we need Steam Workshop content! YOUR Steam Workshop content!”

So yes, a full-on update is on the way for Team Fortress 2. Submissions for the Steam Workshop portion are open up to May 1, for this summer-situated (but not necessarily summer-themed) update.

Back to the fort

Team Fortress 2 is arguably a herald of a genre that would become the team-based hero shooter, adding individual skills and characters to a team-focused FPS contest. The result was a classic that garnered many, many fans over the years.

Still, the game languished over time, and last year fans rallied for a #SaveTF2 campaign, calling for Valve to address the botting issues that had run rampant through Team Fortress 2. Valve did respond, and started to take steps towards fixing the issues.

Now, Team Fortress 2 fans may actually have a new update to look forward to. I’m interested to see how large of an update this will be, but it’s at least a pulse of life that might draw some lapsed fans back into the realm of Team Fortress 2.
