There are plenty of horses to be tamed in Tears of the Kingdom. Some of them are fast, and others are good for pulling things. There are also skeleton stallions known as Stalhorses, and Link can mount one.

Skeleton Horse (Stalhorse) Locations in Tears of the Kingdom

Skeleton horses aren’t too common in Hyrule, though acquiring one is needed for Toffa’s “A Horse Guard’s Request” quest.  The easiest way to get one is to travel to the Sanidin Park Ruins near the Outskirt Stable. They can also be found in the Depths, where they are occasionally ridden by Stalkoblins. The horses can reliably be found near the Nisoij Lightroot, which can be accessed from the large chasm in Hyrule Field.

How to get the Skeleton Horse (Stalhorse) in Tears of the Kingdom

Stalhorses will only spawn at night, so wait it out or have Link pass time near a campfire. Once the sky is dark, the Stalhorses come out of the ground. To mount a skeleton, simply creep up on one and jump on its back once Link is close enough. Eating stealth-boosting meals, or wearing stealth-enhancing armor, such as the Stealth Armor Set from Kakariko Village, will make this easier. Stalhorses that previously belonged to other monsters will be easier to mount, as they won’t run away.

Although riding a Stalhorse is fun, there are a few things to note. Firstly, they aren’t particularly fast. Secondly, they cannot be registered to a stable, which means they can’t be dressed with equipment and bridles. Lastly, they die in the sunlight, so they’re best saved for the Depths, where they can help Link by carrying him over the Gloom.

Though Stalhorses can’t be registered to a stable, there are plenty of other rare horses that can. Epona can easily be transferred from Breath of the Wild to Tears of the Kingdom, and Zelda’s golden horse is obtained after completing the quest given by an NPC at Snowfield Stable. Horses are great companions, as they provide convenient transport, and can give Link a tactical advantage during battles.
