Players beginning their Baldur’s Gate 3 journey would do well in selecting the Cleric. As one of the most versatile classes with its whopping seven subclasses, there is a lot of potential here. The same goes for the best races you can pick to pair with the Cleric class in Baldur’s Gate 3.
Best races for the Baldur’s Gate 3 Cleric class, explained
To be clear, your race doesn’t matter as much as you might think in Baldur’s Gate 3. Though the early access version of the game featured stat changes based on your race and class combo, only your class determines that in the full release.
As such, you can pick a bizarre Cleric combo, such as Dragonborn Cleric, which I play in one of my multiplayer runs. However, if you find yourself stumped at which race to play as a Cleric, here are five races I suggest.
Drow
The Underdark elven race, Drow, may seem like an odd pick, but their Fey Ancestry is a helpful component for a Cleric. You have elements of charming and resistances you can use to become the ultimate support class.
In addition, the extra Perception proficiency is helpful if you plan to be a more melee-focused Cleric.
High Elf
The High Elf is the primary race you want to consider if you want to be any magically-focused class. As the primary healing class in the game, High Elf is valuable for Cleric since it gives you an extra Cantrip to pick for free.
This can be used to give yourself an extra crowd control spell or more offensive capabilities to offset your defensively-focused class.
Deep Gnome
The Deep Gnome, in particular, has some intriguing bonus traits in their Superior Darkvision and boost to stealth. One of the underrated Cleric subclasses is the Domain of Trickery, which turns you into a healing assassin. This particular subclass pairs wonderfully with the Deep Gnome.
Strongheart Halfling
If you opt for a more melee-focused Cleric like the War Cleric, the Strongheart Halfling subrace is a fine choice. In addition to the Lucky and Brave traits that make you more effective in close combat, you also have resilience that keeps you safe from poison.
Zariel Tiefling
For starters, having a devilish character as a holy Cleric is hilarious and ripe for roleplay. But from a utility perspective, the Zariel Tiefling is notable for its focus on performance, intimidation, and fire resistance.
This pairs well with several of the Cleric subclasses, such as the War Cleric, Knowledge Cleric, Light Cleric, and Trickery Cleric. If you want a more unique Cleric character that may surprise people, this is the one to go with.
