Legendary game designer Chris Metzen has officially returned to Blizzard in a full-time role. He will now serve as the Executive Creative Director of the Warcraft universe with a main focus on World of Warcraft in particular. According to the announcement, Metzen will be at the upcoming BlizzCon 2023 to share what’s next for the Warcraft universe. At previous BlizzCon’s Metzen was often the one to reveal new expansions, which fans have surely missed.
For Warcraft fans, this is amazing news. Metzen was instrumental in creating the overall story, world-building, and creative design of the Warcraft universe. He created the original story concept and script of the popular RTS Warcraft 3. With World of Warcraft he continued to work on the script and story of the MMORPG while also creating artwork and doing voice work for the title. He’s well known for doing the voice of Thrall, the main Orc character in Warcraft.
Metzen left Blizzard back in 2016, only to return as a Creative Advisor at the end of last year. It appears that since then his role has grown from advisor to full-time Executive Creative Director.
World of Warcraft’s story has been a bit all over the place as of late, so hopefully Metzen can get it back on the right path. Blizzard is expected to reveal its new expansion at BlizzCon 2023 in early November. Surely Metzen has had a big role in shaping that expansion and will more than likely be the one to announce it.
