Cyberpunk 2077 is a ridiculously large game. The Phantom Liberty expansion adds a whole heap of content in addition to a new district. While it is a single-player game that functions entirely offline, a rarity these days, that doesn’t mean it isn’t prone to crashing. Unfortunately, these crashes have been more prevalent since the release of Phantom Liberty.
Why does Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty keep crashing?
While developer CD Projekt Red has acknowledged that performance for the sci-fi title will be improved with Patch 2.01, details about alleviating crashes are amiss. There are many reasons a game could be crashing, however, adjusting the following two took my experience of numerous crashes each play session to 0.000001.
Fix #1
The first thing is to disable cross-platform Saves. This alone dropped my crash rate to virtually nothing. For whatever reason, this feature triggers something in the game to simply stop responding. It would happen whenever transitioning to a new area by driving or using Fast Travel Points. It would happen when answering the phone or beginning a face-to-face conversation. Essentially anything that triggered an auto-save was rolling the dice on the game not crashing.
- Open the Main Menu
- Go to Settings
- Select Gameplay
- Scroll down to Miscellaneous and toggle “Enable cross-platform Saves” to Off
Fix #2 (PC)
The second best fix is to ensure your GPU drivers are up to date. Both Nvidia and AMD have released a few updates to support Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty. While old drivers might work, the latest are designed to help run the title, and believe me, this game needs all the help it can get.
