NBC is pushing itself further and further into the realm of digital distribution with its latest endeavor, offering shows as download-to-own the day after they air on broadcast TV, in both HD and SD formats.
NBC has already been airing many of their shows on Hulu, but if my memory serves me right, this is their first major download-to-own project. Besides NBC’s shows, we’ll also be getting films from NBC-Universal, although the selection from both areas is a little lacking:
- Milk
- Role Models
- 40-Year Old Virgin
- The Big Lebowski
- The Office
- Heroes
- 30 Rock
- Battlestar Galactica
- Eureka
What really makes me happy is that they’re offering up shows like 30 Rock in HD — something that they’ve yet to do for most of their TV programming. NBC has been the most forthcoming of the major broadcasters when it comes to releasing in HD and putting their stuff online. It’s a changing time for the broadcast industry, and so they’ve got to find any possible revenue options for themselves.
