How to beat the Phantom Jellyfish in Dave the Diver

It looks creepy, but goes down easier than you’d think.

The Phantom Jellyfish is a story boss in Dave the Diver. You’ll have to fight it while mounted on a beluga whale, so you won’t have your normal gun and harpoon available to you. Here’s how to defeat the Phantom Jellyfish!

Avoid the jellyfish bombs

The Phantom Jellyfish will start the fight by sending smaller jellyfish after you. These track you for several seconds before exploding and hurting you. There are two ways to deal with these:

  1. Dash head-on into them (L-Ctrl on PC) to detonate them early and take no damage.
  2. Swim around in circles until they explode on their own.

The number of jellyfish will increase the further you progress the fight. If you get hurt, look for a small black shrimp toward the bottom of the arena. Touching the shrimp will heal you.

Avoid the poison

After all of the smaller jellyfish have exploded, the Phantom Jellyfish will start spraying a green liquid towards you. It will also generate a water current that pushes you to the left. Avoid the projectiles, but stay as close to the boss as you can. This phase is made more difficult by the beluga whale’s large hitbox which swings around as you turn. I’ve had the most success staying at the top edge of the arena, since the ceiling blocks some of the blobs before they can hit my big vertical hitbox as I’m turning.

Dash into the red weak point

As the Phantom Jellyfish is spraying, it will expose its weak point: a glowing red spot under its bell. It looks a bit like a giant eye. Dash into it to deal damage to the boss. It remains vulnerable for a short period of time after it finishes spraying, so you don’t need to hit it while it’s still attacking you. Just stay close and try to hit it when you have an opening. You’ll need to hit the weak point three times to defeat the Phantom Jellyfish for good.

Profit

As the Phantom Jellyfish swims away in defeat, it will leave behind one of its tentacles. Make sure you harvest it before you exit the arena. You can cook its meat into an expensive dish to serve at your restaurant. It will also give you a poison sack that you can use to craft a high-level poison rifle.

Trivia: Real-life sea jellies can have eyes, but they are very small black specks clustered at the edges of their bells. Sea jellies have independently evolved eyes several times, but most allow only rudimentary vision. Maybe that’s why the Phantom Jellyfish just sprays indiscriminately.
