Movie Games and Vaporware have released the neon-soaked FPS Beyond Sunset into Steam Early Access today. It’s expected to stay there for six months before its full release.

Beyond Sunset is part of an oncoming wave of first-person shooters built in the GZDoom Engine (an expanded source port of the engine that 1993’s Doom was built on), including Supplice and Selaco. It bills itself as a cyberpunk shooter with “a rich story and RPG elements.” You play as a woman with incredible abilities and no memory. Another woman promises to give your memories back if you kick some ass.

I’m so tired of amnesiac protagonists. But aside from that, Beyond Sunset has lived on my wishlist for a while now, so I’m definitely going to check it out. It looks pretty fab with its lo-fi aesthetics injected with neon. I love raycasting. I deal with 3D constantly, and 2D games are rife in the indie and small-budget spheres, so I appreciate it when a game gives me 2.5D.

The RPG elements include side-quests and ability upgrades. It also features a soundtrack provided by Karl Vincent, who is touted as a “synthwave legend.” I’m going to have to take their word for it. Beyond Sunset also touts its modability, which I think is sort of a given considering its open-source engine.

Beyond Sunset is available now in Steam Early Access. Vaporware is planning to have its full release in six months. The Early Access FAQ states that the current state of the game is “mostly finished – only minor tweaks and polishes are left.”
