How to play split-screen in Modern Warfare 3

Couch co-op Modern Warfare 3! But not in every game mode.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 split-screen

In Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, you can play Zombies, multiplayer, Warzone, campaign, and more. Some of these game modes, not all, allow players to play in split screen (or ‘couch co-op’). You can play split-screen with someone in the most recent CoD title on the same console.

Enabling split-screen for some MW3 modes

Starting up a game mode that allows split-screen gameplay in Modern Warfare 3 isn’t too difficult. Just follow these steps and you’ll be on your way:

  • Connect two controllers to the same console.
  • Assign a profile or link an account to the second controller.
  • In the top right corner of the screen, a prompt for split-screen should appear, click on it.
  • Choose a game mode that allows for split-screen gameplay.

You should be able to play local multiplayer with someone on any platform where Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is available. Unfortunately, not all game modes are playable, including one that’s a fan favorite for nightlong couch co-op sessions.

Modern Warfare 3 game modes that allow split-screen

Unfortunately, Zombies mode does not allow split-screen gameplay in Modern Warfare 3. Many past Call of Duty titles allowed this feature, and players loved it.

Additionally, the campaign is unavailable while playing with a second controller plugged in. Multiplayer modes do allow split-screen, but a select few playlists will not let you enter. Players cannot play Free For All, Invasion, and Ground War game modes with a second person on the same platform. All other multiplayer modes are available, as are private matches if you just want to 1v1 your friend.
