id Software will release Doom Resurrection on the iPhone AppStore next week, VentureBeat revealed.
Resurrection is a new first-person shooter Doom title, developed by Escalation Studios with the help of id’s John Carmack, using assets from Doom 3. The new story takes place alongside the events of the original 2004 first-person shooter, with a full eight levels and up to five hours of gameplay.
Carmack totally hearts the iPhone, calling it a “real game platform, not a tiny little toy.” He says the hardware should make it a better gaming platform than both the PlayStation Portable and the Nintendo DS. The only thing holding it back, he says, is “software inefficiencies.”
He’s talking about the iPhone software itself; he’ll be meeting with Apple soon to offer advice on how to optimize it for gaming. He also says that features of Doom Resurrection, like peer-to-peer cooperative multiplayer, could be unlocked when iPhone 3.0 software is released.
Doom Resurrection is being dubbed the first “next-generation” iPhone game – are you interested in this, or are you happy with more casual experiences?
