Depending on how much time you spend in the open-world areas, you’ll be spending a lot of time riding Chocoback in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Chocobo are already cute, but you can actually dress them up, and this is how you do it.
Every open-world area has a Chocobo vendor. The one in Grasslands, for example, is at Bill’s Ranch. In this case, it’s Chloe. Generally, wherever you go, if there’s a ranch, there will be a vendor there. The vendors sell crafting supplies for Gil, but they are also where you get Chocobo gear. You will also get Chocobo gear out in the world through questing, but in my experience, it’s pretty rare.
Chocobo gear comes in three parts: feet, body, and head. Each new vendor you speak to will add a new set of gear to purchase.
The gear is bought with golden feathers. You typically get two feathers when you first get a Chocobo in a new region, but the rest of them you gain by fixing Chocobo stops out in the world. This is done by standing their sign/weathervane back up. Gear at the beginning of the game is pretty cheap but be warned that the price for later sets increases. Also, in Dustbowl, there is a gearset that must be bought with Sylkis Greens, which are quest rewards for that area.
In order to actually equip the gear you’ve acquired, you’ll need to find one of the signs in the header image. They have a yellow, masked Chocobo on them with a screwdriver and wrench on them. You commonly find these at ranches, and they are commonly located next to the stables.
The Chocobo gear doesn’t have any effect beyond looks when you’re out exploring the game world. However, when you make it to the Golden Saucer and start participating in Chocobo races, you equip your steeds with that same gear. There, however, it changes their stats on the track. So, while you will just want your Chocobuddy to look good out in the world, when it’s race time, you might want to choose a more strategic outfit.
