As with all online games, Sea of Thieves relies on servers to host players so they can sail its open seas and plunder the depths freely. But that reliance becomes an issue when servers go down.
Every time you log into Sea of Thieves and sail away on an adventure, you’re joining a server with dozens of other crews who could help or hinder your efforts. There are many servers for you to join, filled with the game’s 40 million and growing player base, which is fantastic if you’re hoping for an occupied online world. The downside is that everyone suffers when the servers go down, and no one can figure out what’s going on.
Is Sea of Thieves down?
Sea of Thieves is back online, as the latest update has been implemented with the release of the game’s PS5 version. This version went into early access on April 25, 2024, with the full release alongside Season 12 hitting on April 30, 2024.
PS5 players can now get into the game and start making progress ahead of the next season. It’s an exciting time to be a new player with so many pirates already out at sea. Still, if any error persists for too long, it could prove to be a source of aggravation for those players, like myself, who pre-ordered the Premium Edition to get a full five days head-start.
How to check the Sea of Thieves servers
The best way to check the Sea of Thieves servers is by visiting the game’s official server status page. This will tell you about any server maintenance or parts of the game that are temporarily disabled and why. It’ll also highlight the main error code that’s popping up so you can check if you’re getting the same one to see if you’re in the same boat as everyone else.
If you see an error on the page, you’ll have to hold tight and wait for Rare to figure out and solve the problem before you can play. You cannot get into Sea of Thieves if the servers are down, but once the page shows that they are back up, you can go right back in.
