Destiny 2 adds three new PvP maps to the Crucible pool

Well, how about that.

For Destiny 2 players, it’s been an eventful couple of weeks. On top of chasing after Archie, grinding for an up-to-date Blast Furnace, and trying to solo the new boss run mode, it was easy to forget that Bungie had a new PvP map pack in the oven, too.

Indeed, Bungie’s just pushed out the long-anticipated Destiny 2 PvP map pack featuring three genuinely interesting new competitive mode maps. For context, Destiny 2‘s PvP has been woefully underpopulated with new maps over the course of its lifecycle. While we’ve had a map here or there, the last time the game received a meaningful number of PvP maps was – believe it or not – back in Season 10, making this a really big step forward for the mode.

Destiny 2’s three new PvP maps are now available

As shown in the snazzy new trailer featured above, Destiny 2 now plays host to three entirely new PvP maps:

  • Cirrus Plaza, Neomuna
  • Eventide Labs, Deep Stone Crypt
  • Dissonance, Pyramid Vessel

Coming out all at once, this is possibly the biggest win Destiny 2‘s PvP mode has had in literal years now, as Bungie had only been adding a single new map to the game every so often. This is, in comparison, a huge deal – especially if all three maps end up playing well in practice. Of course, it will take some time for the community to settle into the new combat pipelines on these maps, but there’s good reason to cheer for this release even on the basis of variety alone.

As it currently stands, there’s a grand total of about 30 or so PvP maps in Destiny 2 if we take into account all of the game’s different PvP game modes. This is a solid number of course, but it’s worth remembering that Bungie also sunset a bunch of them with the release of the Beyond Light DLC, which did not thrill the community at the time.

Whatever the case may be, Destiny 2 PvP fans should now have plenty to play around with, and Bungie appears to have done everything it could to turn the story around following the game’s disastrous year of Lightfall. With a slew of content updates and improvements, many of which dropped very recently as part of the free Into the Light mini-DLC, things are on the up and up once again. The next major paid DLC, The Final Shape, is due to launch on June 4, and it’s going to be pivotal for the long-term health of the game. Taking into account how poorly the Lightfall DLC was received, Bungie needs to continue its current stride to truly win back its community, and only time will tell whether that pans out or not.
