I like trivia, and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door provided me with not one, but two (technically-sort-of three) chances to flex my brain muscle. Throughout the game you’re quizzed by Thwomp twice on the goings on of the game. If you’re paying attention, they aren’t too difficult, but if you’re coming back from an absence or are simply absent-minded, here’s some help.
Chapter 1 Thwomp Quiz answers
Your first quiz in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door happens early. During Chapter 1, you need to get the Sun and Moon stones from Shhwonk Fortress. You’ll meet an ornery Thwomp who will hand over the stones if you can beat his quiz. You only need to get five correct without getting three strikes.
Here are the questions and answers.
Q1: What’s hidden in Shhwonk Fortress?
A1: Sun and Moon Stones
Q2: What do/does one [item] and one [item] cost at the shop in Petalburg? Total!
A2: X Coins.
This question sometimes varies. You may want to write down each items cost in the Petalburg shop. If they ask what a mushroom and fireflower cost, the answer is 12. If you get it wrong, you’ll just have to answer another question.
Q3: What is the name of the mayor of Petalburg?
A3: Kroop.
Q4: Tell me, now! Where is the Crystal Star?
A4: Hooktail Castle.
Q5: How can one get from Rogueport to Petal Meadows?
A5: Go through a Pipe.
Q6: Which of the following characters can be found in Petalburg?
A6: Koopa Troopas
Q7: What number question is this?
A7: Number Seven.
Don’t worry if you fail. Your punishment is simply having to face Clefts. If you have a POW block on you, this isn’t a problem at all.
Chapter 7 Thwomp Quiz answers
You run into another Thwomp in Chapter 7 of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. This one is found in the X-Nauts moon fortress. The rules are the same: answer five without missing three.
Here are the questions and answers:
Q1: Exactly what’s hidden here?
A1: Elevator key
Q2: What’s the name of the girl in Petalburg who’s waiting patiently for Koops’ return?
A2: Koopie Koo
Q3: Goomba, Lava Bubble, Buzzy Beetle, and Boo. How many feet do they have? Total!
A: 6 feet
Q4: Where was the one, the only, Diamond Star?
A4: Hooktail’s belly
Q5: What was the name of the very first champion of the Glitz Pit?
A5: Prince Mush
Q6: What did Frankie and Francesca loose on Keelhaul Key?
A6: A ring.
Q7: What number question is this?
A7: Number Seven.
If you fail here, it’s X-Yux you face. Not the worst fate to befall you.
Chapter 4 Interlude – Peach/TEC Quiz answers
Here’s that technically-sort-of quiz I mentioned. At the end of Chapter 4 of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and before the start of Chapter 5, there’s a Peach interlude. The crux of it is that Tec has Peach answer 5 questions. The difference here is that rather than quiz Peach on what happened previously in the game, he asks her to deduce what is happening in the story right now.
It’s a very interesting way of delivering exposition. As it respects you, the player, enough to assume you’ve figured things out already. And if anything is unclear, it gives you the necessary prompt to finally put that piece of the puzzle into place.
I’m actually not sure what happens if you fail here, but I’m guessing it isn’t much. That doesn’t matter, though, because here are the answers:
Q1: What will happen if you collect seven Crystal Stars?
A1: Thousand-Year Door opens.
Q2: What is the goal of Grodus, leader of the X-Nauts?
A2: To conquer the world.
Q3: What is the legendary treasure that waits behind the Thousand-Year Door?
A3: A 1,000-year-old demon’s soul.
Q4: What does Sir Grodus wish to do with this ancient demon’s soul?
A4: Bring the demon back to life.
Q5: What is required to seal up the demon again?
A5: Crystal Stars.
There you have it. All the answers to all the quizzes (and quiz-adjacent sequences) in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
