Both LEGO and Harry Potter have built up truly enormous fan bases over the years, and whether you’re looking for a gift for a Harry Potter fan or you’re trying to recreate the LEGO Harry Potter video games, there’s no shortage of sets which combine the two fandoms into stunning creations.
If you’re just dipping your toe into the world of LEGO sets, fair warning that building and collecting them can become a pretty expensive hobby. However, once built, they look incredible on any shelf and can actually gain value once sets become discontinued or retired by LEGO itself.
Speaking of which, some of the sets on this list are retired by LEGO, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be purchased. I’ve used the official LEGO site’s pricing for this list, but you can find any retired sets pretty easily on Amazon, or through other stores which sell LEGO.
Hogwarts Castle
Price: $469.99 USD
Pieces: 6,020
If you think of Harry Potter LEGO sets, this one will likely come to mind. It’s absolutely gargantuan (measuring 22 inches tall, 27 inches wide and 16 inches deep), is filled with secrets, and there’s always some small details to find no matter where you look. Hogwarts Castle is the dream set for any combined fan of LEGO and Harry Potter, as long as they have the space for the finished product.
12 Grimmauld Place
Price: Retired
Pieces: 1,083
While not the biggest set on this list, 12 Grimmauld Place has an interesting extending section which allows more space to play and more secrets to find. Coming complete with all of the faces who are regular at the home of Sirius Black, such as Tonks, Kingsley Shacklebolt and Kreacher, this set is fun to both look at and interact with.
Attack on the Burrow
Price: Retired
Pieces: 1,047
Even though nobody wants to relive the memory of Death Eaters penetrating the wards around the Burrow and burning it to the ground, this set comes complete with everything you’d need to do just that. Bellatrix LeStrange and Nymphadora Tonks make an appearance alongside a selection of beloved red-haired Weasleys and, of course, Harry Potter himself.
Diagon Alley
Price: $449.99 USD
Pieces: 5,544
While you can buy the individual parts of this set on their own, such as Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes or Madam Malkin’s, if you’ve got the funds it’s worth purchasing them together for the extra goodies which come included as part of the complete Diagon Alley set. If you’re a fan of minifigs, included with this set are four exclusives: Gilderoy Lockhart, Florean Fortescue, Lucius Malfoy, and the Daily Prophet photographer.
Gringott’s Wizarding Bank (Collectors’ Edition)
Price: $429.99 USD
Pieces: 4,801
If you’re looking for the crowning piece on Diagon Alley, you’re obviously going to need Gringott’s Wizarding Bank. It’s the centerpiece of the Alley in the books and it’s no different in LEGO format. This 32-inch tall set comes with minifigs of Harry, Griphook and even some LEGO Galleons to hoard away in the Vaults which dominate the bottom half of the build. Plus, it’s got a working cart track and comes with a Dragon. Need I say more?
Hogwarts Express (Collectors’ Edition)
Price: $499.99 USD
Pieces: 5,129
You can’t get to Hogwarts without the Hogwarts Express, and this LEGO set comes complete with a ticket to board at Platform 9¾. It’s a classic in the world of Harry Potter LEGO and while it’s not tall, it’s long, measuring in at 47 inches. You don’t simply get the steam train itself, but also some tracks and at least part of the now iconic platform, making this a pretty epic display piece.
Hogwarts Icons (Collectors’ Edition)
Price: $299.99 USD
Pieces: 3,010
While it’s inarguable that LEGO Hedwig takes center stage in this set, it also comes with a myriad of extras which celebrate the world of Harry Potter. On top of Hedwig, you also get a set of Harry’s instantly recognizable circle glasses, a wand to build, five potions bottles (sadly they don’t work in real life), a Golden Snitch, a customizable acceptance letter from Hogwarts, as well as all the pieces you need to create a scarf in your chosen house colors.
Hogwarts Wizard’s Chess
Price: Retired
Pieces: 876
As someone who grew up playing with LEGO, I’d argue that it’s designed to be played with, and no set on this list is designed more for that purpose than the Wizard’s Chess set. Once the 10.5-inch square board and figures are constructed, you can use them to actually play a game of Chess when it’s not on display. On top of that, included in this set is a golden Severus Snape minifig, made to mark 20 years of Harry Potter LEGO.
The Knight Bus
Price: Retired
Pieces: 403
If you’re looking for a Harry Potter LEGO set to build relatively quickly which won’t take up too much space, I strongly recommend The Knight Bus. One side swings open to allow you to move items around inside. A hanging chandelier and even a LEGO Daily Prophet to clutter up the place. This set is perfect for younger builders or collectors who are running out of room for larger builds.
The Shrieking Shack & Whomping Willow
Price: $89.99 USD
Pieces: 777
Not just one well-known landmark in the Harry Potter series, but two in one LEGO set. With this set, you can recreate The Prisoner of Azkaban in all of its glory, or simply have the set on display with the rest of your collection. One particularly fun feature of this set is the inclusion of the three remaining Marauder’s animagus forms – Scabbers for Peter Pettigrew, a wolf for Remus, and Padfoot for Sirius.
