A number of UK retailers may be skeptical of the PSPgo, but American retailer GameStop is getting wet at the prospect of selling Sony’s latest attempt to dominate handheld gaming. Despite the PSPgo’s status as a download-only platform, Gamestop still believes that the new PlayStation Portable will be worth stocking.
“On the PSP Go, we’re excited to be carrying that for a couple reasons,” beams Tony Bartel, EVP of Merchandising and Marketing. “We do participate in the downstream revenue via … points cards, and the good news is we hold a dominant market position in that category as it relates to digital downloads. We’re very excited about selling the PSPgo, we’re very excited to be reserving it, reserves have been picking up, and we have a very clear roadmap on how we can drive profitability on the sell of games.
“It will also be a strong driver to our trade-in process where you have people that will have UMD games that will no longer work on that platform, so that will fuel additional currency for GameStop.”
The PSP as a platform has become incredibly exciting, with some great looking games coming up and promising services like PSP Minis. I really think the purchase of a PSPgo is in my future, and who knows? Maybe I won’t regret it. Maybe.
