Darksiders is that game that is sitting on my must-play list, but just keeps on getting bumped down one more notch every month as more games come out. I will get to it, and the confirmation of a sequel already being well into production has given me that extra push I need.
The game and its status were revealed during a THQ analyst meeting Saturday night where Core Games VP Danny Bilson said, “Darksiders 2 is coming. We’ve green lit that. It’s well into production now, it’s out two years from now.”
But it ain’t just about sequels, Darksiders is a mother effing brand and THQ knows this. However, Bilson expresses a fantastic view on how they are approaching building Darksiders as a franchise. “[Darksiders] did about twice as much as Red Faction. It’s done pretty well. I believe that franchise building isn’t about a zillion units out of the gate, it’s about building a fan base, building a community of people that dig it, listening to them, doing what you think is good. The second will be twice as big as the first one and the third one you get to big numbers. That’s my strategy.”
I don’t know, Mr. Bilson. Listening to the fans and growing slowly through quality games? That sounds far too sane to work. Best to just pump out another game every year. Right, Mr. Kotick?
